This morning was our second doctor’s appointment, where we got to meet our actual doctor for the first time (the first appointment we worked with the nurse practitioner). Dr. Jennifer Hendrickson is pretty awesome. She seems very down to earth and practical about pregnancy yet sensitive to our worries as first time parents. I’m really going to enjoy working with her.
The highlight of the appointment was our first ultrasound! They do a 12 week ultrasound to check the baby’s size and make sure our due date, which was estimated by my last menstrual period, is accurate.
She squirted that cold jelly on my belly then an image appeared on the screen. It was AMAZING! Our little “peanut” was moving all over the place! It wouldn’t sit still! We could see the arms and the legs and the head…all of the major pieces were there! She froze the image, measured it and it was 5 centimeters and some change. That’s almost 2 full inches!
She unfroze the image so we could see the live image again but this time the kid was just hanging out not squirming too much. She informed us that normally we’d get a print out, but they were out of paper. Disappointed but not totally out of hope, Matt asked if he could take a picture of the screen with his phone.
So she tried to get another good image (didn’t really happen) froze it, and Matt took the picture above. That little blob is out baby!!
We’ll have another ultrasound on December 9th for our first trimester screening where they test for down syndrome and some other genetic issues. But after that the next time we see our baby is when we find out the gender in January!
