Well, we did it. We canceled our cable television subscription. And today marks one week without our precious cable channels. Guess what!? WE SURVIVED!!!
Matt and I have been toying with the idea of canceling cable for a while now. At least a couple years. We realized a while back that our Tivo basically owns us. We tell it about shows we enjoy and in return it gives us a “to do list” of things we have to watch. And we better watch those shows quick, or they will get deleted to make space for something else! Our evenings were defined by what we had to watch that night, and not in a good way. We were slaves to the Tivo.
You may be wondering, “why, then, didn’t we cancel Tivo service instead of cable?”. Well, we still really enjoy the service Tivo provides, and have grown quite accustomed to fast-forwarding through commercials. Plus it’s only $13/month while cable was around $50/month. That and we realized the shows we really love and look forward to watching are almost all on network channels anyway. AKA: FREE. And the shows we enjoy but aren’t on network channels are easily found through iTunes rentals, or websites like Hulu.
So far, in our week without cable, we’ve been able to catch all our favorite shows—Venture Brothers, House, Mad Men, Community, 30 Rock, The Office and Grey’s Anatomy. SUCCESS!! And our evenings are WONDERFUL! We’ve found time to read books that we’ve been meaning to read, and actually accomplish things during the precious hours after Adelaide’s bed time. So great!!
It’s sad that we didn’t have the self control to do these things and still have cable, but I’m thrilled that we’ve removed the temptation and time-waster from our lives and are now enjoying life, and each other, more!
Ever thought about canceling cable? What are your hang-ups?
