This was Adelaide’s first year trick-or-treating!
Our neighborhood has no sidewalks, and very few street lights, so we decided to trick-or-treat with Adelaide’s friend Emerson in their beautiful suburban neighborhood.
The girls get along great, so it was a lot of fun to see them so excited about this holiday.
Adelaide dressed up as a robot! Matt and I made her costume, which was super fun! It cost a grand total of $20 to make her costume, and $10 of that was for her shoes, which she has already gotten additional use out of, so really…it was a $10 costume.
The skirt is an emergency blanket that I sewed a seam into and then threaded elastic through. Pretty legit! We also used the emergency blanket to cover the poster board that formed her torso piece. I bought some stick-on reflectors and Matt cleverly disassembled a blinking halloween-themed headband to extract the lights and install them on the torso piece. I thought she looked adorable!
Unfortunately, I didn’t get very good pictures. Apparently, darkness plus an ultra reflective costume doesn’t make for good photography conditions. But here are some of the decent ones I did get:
We only got the phrase “trick-or-treat” out of the girls about 50% of the time, but they almost always came through with a “thank you”. Emerson started saying “candy please” which made us all laugh pretty hard, and then she’d follow it up with “Candy for Adelaide too?”. None of the neighbors could understand what she was asking, but we heard her and thought it was sweet of her to think of her friend.
Adelaide got so excited when she received her treats that she would yell, “Thank you! See you soon!” and then turn around, and run down the driveway yelling, “Look mommy! Look daddy!”. Made me smile every time.
Matt managed to capture some video of our night. Again, the low light makes the videos pretty difficult to see much, but it’s more about the audio than the video. These girls’ exclamations of excitement are just precious! Enjoy!
More pictures, compliments of Nicole!!

Addie’s costume turned out so great! I was just telling B that you guys are going to be the ultimate school project parents. All these kids are going to come to class with little play dough volcanos, and then Addie will walk in with you & Matt behind her holding Mt. Vesuvius with smoke and lava and all. That’s what the awesome reflector/LED hookup made me see in her future. 🙂
